This study developed and validated a brief Japanese adaptation of the Sexual Consent Scale–Revised—the Sexual Consent Scale (SCS). In Study 1, 528 unmarried Japanese adults completed a web-based survey. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 15-item, three-factor structure comprising Positive attitude toward establishing sexual consent, Behavioral approach to sexual consent, and Misconceived attitude toward obtaining sexual consent. All factors showed acceptable internal consistency (α=0.722–0.780). Correlations with sexual-sensation seeking and social desirability supported construct validity. In Study 2 (N=1,107), confirmatory factor analysis supported the three-factor model (CFI=0.932, TLI=0.918, RMSEA=0.066) and demonstrated measurement invariance for both sexes. Scores for Positive attitude toward establishing sexual consent were higher among women, whereas those for Behavioral approach to sexual consent and Misconceived attitude toward obtaining sexual consent were higher among men. In logistic regression analysis, Behavioral approach to sexual consent predicted consistent condom use (OR=1.101, p<0.001). Conversely, compared with participants with specific partners only, participants with nonspecific partners only (OR=0.526, p=0.008) and those with both specific and nonspecific partners (OR=0.586, p=0.049) were less likely to use condoms consistently. Overall, the SCS may be a reliable and valid measure for research and educational applications concerning sexually transmitted infection prevention in Japan.
