The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in Japan is increasing rapidly among teens and approaching a peak among individuals in their 20s. Therefore, enhancing education on STD prevention in compulsory schooling is a matter of utmost urgency. However, sex education is engaged in a difficult balance with school policies based on municipal and government guidelines. At present, the content of sex education being provided does not align with the psychophysical development and readiness of the students.

In this study, we have created standard materials for the teaching STD prevention in compulsory education (referred to as “educational materials”) following new government guidelines. This article introduces the Inochi no Baton (“Relay of Life”) series in 7 volumes, which incorporates perspectives related to career education, including future outlooks, among other things.

The educational materials are designed to provide teachers in compulsory education with a wide range of choices based on student readiness. In summary, the study aims to present novel materials and methods for teaching sex education to junior high school students in Japan using educational materials on STD prevention based on government guidelines.

Key words: compulsory education following government guidelines; educational materials; junior high school students; teaching sex education; teaching sexually transmitted disease prevention
