Although the use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) as a topical therapy for condyloma acuminate (CA) has been recommended in the guidelines, reports of clinical cases are rare. We evaluated the effectiveness of topical TCA treatment in five patients with anal CA. We applied 80% TCA once per 1–4 weeks to the anal lesions of five patients (mean age, 34.3 years; four cases were HIV positive). Two cases showed a complete response, and two cases showed a partial response. Because the remaining case was not re-examined following the TCA treatment, the outcome was unclear. Our results showed that the treatment of CA with TCA was useful, but it was accompanied by a risk of ulcer formation. Thus, the patient should be sufficiently informed of the treatment risks, and informed consent prior to the treatment of CA with TCA should be obtained.
