Currently, the first-line treatment for gonococcal infection is intravenous ceftriaxone, which has been demonstrated as effective for almost all patients. Between April 1, 2016, and March 31, 2017, real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) or gonococcal antigen detection identified 459 patients with gonococcal urethritis and 122 with gonococcal pharyngitis in our hospital. All patients were treated intravenously with 1 g ceftriaxone. We report that five of these patients (two with gonococcal urethritis and three with gonococcal pharyngitis) showed Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the nucleic acid amplification after ceftriaxone treatment.
